Lagrangian Modeling of Marine Microplastics Fate and Transport: The State of the Science

Microplastics pollution has led to irreversible environmental consequences and triggered global concerns. It been shown that water resources marine food consumers are adversely affected by microplastics due their physico-chemical characteristics. This study attempts comprehensively review the structure of four well-known Lagrangian particle-tracking models, i.e., Delft3D—Water Quality Particle tracking module (D-WAQ PART), Ichthyoplankton (Ichthyop), Track Marine Plastic Debris (TrackMPD), Canadian Microplastic Simulation (CaMPSim-3D) in simulating fate transport microplastics. Accordingly, each model is investigated with respect addressing involved physical processes (including advection, diffusion, windage, beaching, washing-off) transformation (particularly biofouling degradation) play key roles microplastics’ behavior environment. In addition, effects properties (mainly size, diameter, shape) on trajectories reviewed. The models’ capabilities shortcomings simulation also discussed. present sheds light some aspects were not properly addressed such as homo- hetero-aggregation, agglomeration, photodegradation, chemical biological degradation well additional advection wave-induced drift. can be regarded a reliable steppingstone for future modification reviewed models.
